As a Lonehollow Guide, I learned how to lead, control, and manage not only a cabin full of campers, but also a class of co-ed and mixed-aged campers. I learned how to teach cleaning skills, table manners, and specialized knowledge, such as rock-climbing and archery. I was challenged to step out of my comfort zone, be more outgoing, and motivate campers to do seemingly ridiculous and goofy activities. I also led as an example to not only display positive character qualities and competencies, but also effectively communicate those same aspects to campers to help them live positive lifestyles and become successful and influential adults.
Since this was my internship, I assumed some extra responsibilities, which included being in charge of the cabin evening program and Sunday cabin activity assignments. The way these two programs worked is on the first day of each session, campers in a cabin met and voted on which activities they would like to do during these programs. Once they had voted on the activities, I would then input their top choices into a spreadsheet. Next, I would assign which activities they would be doing and the times for or programs in which they would doing these activities. After I had figured out the cabin schedules for these programs, I would then assign staff to either be with a cabin, or be running the activities. Finally, after I assigned staff positions, I would then set up a lot of the activities in the morning or afternoon before the scheduled program times. In addition, if the staff had any questions or concerns relating to these programs, they would contact with me for resolution. |
